Marion County Courthouse
Project Type: Full Historic Restoration
Location: Jefferson, Texas
Project Description
The 1912 Marion County Courthouse was originally designed by architect Elmer G. Withers in the Classical Revival style. Today, the building is designated as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The restoration planning documents and construction were funded in part by the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program (THCPP). The County fundraised for nearly 20 years to meet their local grant match.
Komatsu’s restoration design called for repairs, repointing, and cleaning of the exterior masonry. The wood windows were repaired in an earlier emergency grant project prior to the full restoration. The clay tile roof was replaced in kind.
A 1973 renovation drastically altered the District Courtroom. Komatsu removed an intrusive wall at the north side of the Courtroom, which uncovered the exterior facing windows and allowed the judge’s bench to be relocated to its original position. A drop ceiling was also removed, revealing the original plaster ceiling above. Replica light fixtures were created based on historic photographs of the building.
